Do you know why you have received a tax refund?
Countless people all over the UK receive tax rebates every month, for a variety of different reasons. If you have received a tax rebate cheque through the post recently, without expecting it, you will agree that the extra money always comes in useful.
Most people will agree that the UK tax system is a little complicated for everyone to understand, and the same goes for tax rebates. This is why most of us don't know how our tax payments, or our tax rebates, are worked out.
A tax rebate, especially one that comes out of the blue, is always a nice thing to receive. However, it is also important that you know why you have received a tax refund and how it was worked out, so that you can spend the money guilt-free. There will be no need to worry that a mistake has been made, or that you will be asked to give the refund back again.
Amongst the many people who may be eligible to claim a tax rebate are those who have recently stopped working, left the country to live overseas, or have become self-employed. It is often the case that these people are taxed on a whole-year basis, even if they stop working part-way through the year. For this period, a tax rebate can be claimed.
The same goes for people who don't earn enough to pay full tax, such as part-time workers and students. Mistakes can often be made by employers or within the tax system and you may have paid more than you should have, so you can claim tax back too.
Of course, you may also be eligible for a tax refund just because you've paid too much tax. The most common reason for this occurrence is being on the wrong tax code, so you should check yours with your employer immediately to see if you can claim tax back.
