New Tanning Tax Hits Salons
The summer of 2010 marked a new 10 percent tax on tanning as part of President Barrack Obama's new healthcare overhaul. Since the new tax went into effect on July 1, 2010, Americans have been paying a bit more to go tanning.
Supporters of the tax claim that it is intended to deter tanning, which some research has linked to increased cases of melanoma. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the tax is a positive step toward skin cancer prevention and serves as a strong message from the federal government to Americas youth that indoor tanning is dangerous. Although the tax does have many supporters, there is a great deal of opposition. For instance, salon owners are for the most part opposed to the new tax because they feel it will hurt their businesses. Small business owners are especially upset and feel attacked. They have voiced their concerns to a wide variety of media outlets. Even reality television stars, such as MTV's Snooki have voiced their outrage.
This new tax was included as part of the healthcare overhaul as an attempt to prevent skin cancer rates within America. However, it is important to note that some research has shows indoor tanning to improve vitamin D levels within the body. Vitamin D has been known to help conditions such as osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, hypertension and even depression.
If you like tanning and are concerned with the new tanning tax, you do have options. You can contact your congressional representative and let them know how the tanning tax is impacting you. If you prefer, you can also consider purchasing an in-home tanning booth. Doing so will help you avoid the continuous fees associated with tanning in a salon. If you choose to go this route, make sure that you properly maintain your bed in order to reduce health risks. This includes but is not limited to maintaining the bulbs and lamps. Clean lamps reduce the amount of time necessary to achieve the tan you desire.
