The Singapore Government’s Immigrant Work Permits

A number of tax exemption opportunities and appealing incentives are offered by Singapore to multinational companies who plan to invest in the city-state. Moreover, Singapore has clear-cut rules and policies for immigration. Due to these, Singapore is selected by foreign entrepreneurs and professionals as the country where they can set up their businesses and/or find work.

For you to be able to work lawfully in this city-state, you musty apply for a work permit from the Singapore government. There are various kinds of work permit granted to foreign working professionals and entrepreneurs in Singapore, and this article serves as an overview of each of them.

Employment Pass (EP): This work permit is granted to entrepreneurs or employees who will work in Singapore. For an immigrant entrepreneur to be issued an Employment Pass, he or she must have at least a college degree from a respectable educational institution and his or her salary must amount to more than SG$2500.00 each month. The validity of the Employment pass is 1 to two years, and may be renewed.

Entrepreneur Pass (EntrePass): There are situations when entrepreneurs wanting to set up businesses in Singapore may not be eligible for an EP because they have no university degrees; the Singapore government, in these instances, issues entrepreneurs the EntrePass. The EntrePass is valid for 1 to two years and can be renewed considering that as the business enterprise is still viable.

S Pass: As long as a mid-level immigrant employee's employer meets the eligibility quota required by the Singapore government, the professional can be granted an S Pass. A worker must have a fixed monthly salary of SGD1800.00 and, rather than being a degree holder, may only have at least a technical diploma. As long as the employee is working for his or her employer, this work permit is renewable; its validity period is from 1 to 2 years.

Miscellaneous Work Pass: This work permit is granted to foreigners who are on short-term work assignments in Singapore. Examples of these short-term designations are workshops, seminars, and/or conferences.
